1418. THEY SURVIVED IT
WHAT THE PROJECT IS ABOUT
This project was created in 2015.
1418 days and nights. 1725 destroyed and burned cities and villages. 32 thousand blown up factories. 2600 - and this is only if you count in a straight line - kilometers of military roads traveled. All this is the most bloody, most terrible and most terrible war in the 20th century. The Great Patriotic War.
The "1418" project is dedicated to those people, who know about the War more than we do. Those people who talk about It even 70 years after without excess sentimentality and stir, but with pride for their country and strong belief in victory.
The Moscow photographer Alex Yocu photographed veterans and witnesses of the Great Patriotic War – some in senior centers, others surrounded by loving family members. These are not staged photos, they were made as candidly as possible under natural conditions. Alex managed to photograph his heroes as they were talking about the war, about how they found themselves there and what their life was like after.
THE HEROES OF THE PROJECT
It has been 70 years. Those who survived the war, who remember it beyond their stories, have very few left. The fate of these people has developed in different ways: someone is now celebrating the holiday with tears in their eyes in the family circle, surrounded by care and love; someone - among the same, like themselves, lonely old people. But both those and others are united by these terrible 1418 days of the war.
SEVERAL STORIES
"The war came early, I was still in school. When my father was killed, I went to Krasnaya Presnya to ask for a volunteer. He said that if they don't take it, I'll run away anyway. I went through Romania, Hungary, and I met victory near Austria. Then I was already a commander. A soldier comes to me: "Comrade commander, victory!" But I did not believe it and said: "If you tell the truth, I will break my watch!"
Anatoly Danilovich Galitsky
89 years, paratrooper and infantryman
"My family name is Nesterov, so I wanted to serve in aviation since childhood. When the war started, they sent me to study.
We flew on different planes, including American ones - there, of course, the instruments are different, but we pilots must adapt to any aircraft.
I fought in Ukraine, in Europe. Victory Day met in Ivano-Frankivsk. Then we flew to Poland, sat in Dresden: looked, looked like. "What shall we do here?" The regiment commander asked. They told us that they took Berlin. And we flew back. I believe that in the war we were cherished - and saved".

Vasily Fedorovich Nesterov
91 years, fighter pilot
"During the War I worked at a factory, we produced parts for weapons. Old people taught, they said: "If you work, you will develop a proletarian flair, you will feel people." I studied at the school of working youth - you come from school - and ran to the factory.
The mood was unhappy. We put old tractors on the streets of Moscow as barricades. Then they climbed onto the roofs of tall houses. In the attics were barrels of water and special mites to extinguish the "lighter". So they put out".

Vadim Abramovich Geht
90 years, front worker
"I only remember how my father came from the War, we then lived in barracks. He worked for me at the Lubyanka in the FSB. Chunky, funny, blue eyes. It's a long time to talk about him, but he was a very bright person.
I also remember how we evacuated for a year and a half, then back. There were bombing all around. We have lost a lot of things. The children then acted: people get out of the wagons, and the children once and again, seized what is possible, and run.
In general, my story is not the most interesting".
Rimma Nikolaevna Polyakova
78 years, child of war
EXHIBITION IN MOSCOW MANEGE
In June 2015 the second exhibition of the project took place in Moscow Manege in the very center of Moscow.
It's main aim was to show the faces of people who survived the worst war of the 20th century and who won it. To recall that these people, scorched by the war, live among us. And now they need our help, or at least attention. They do not ask for anything, but they rejoice in any manifestation of concern on our part. And peering into these faces, you can, as on a map, read what is written in many volumes of books and history textbooks.
At the opening of the exhibition, a charity packaging of products was organized by the Foodbank Rus. Each of the guests could take part in it. All products were then sent to charity funds that help the elderly in need.
EXHIBITION AND CHARITY AUCTION IN GOGOL-CENTER
In May 2015 the first exhibition of the project was held at the Gogol-сenter.
At the opening of the exhibition, a charity auction was held by the Honored Actress of the Russian Federation Victoria Isakova. Over 300,000 rubles were raised at the auction. All the money was transferred to charity funds that help the elderly in need.
